New sponsors and increased prize money feature in the 2018 Guild of Motoring Writers’ Annual Awards, which are now open for entries.

Some of the awards have revised criteria to make them more relevant to modern automotive journalism and to focus on the type of entries the judges are particularly looking for. There are 14 journalistic awards with a total prize fund of £13,750.

Peter James Insurance has joined the list of award sponsors taking over the Editor of the Year category, while the prize money has been increased both in the IAM RoadSmart Road Safety and Market Engineering Technology categories.

In each award category a short-list of three finalists will be selected and announced prior to the presentation evening – all three finalists will be provided with a complimentary ticket worth £90 to the Guild’s Annual Dinner and Awards event on Thursday 29 November at the Royal Automobile Club in Pall Mall, London. The finalists will be featured in a special event programme available on the night prior to the winner of each award being announced.

The winner in each category will receive a cheque and a crystal glass trophy to take home, and their presentation photograph will appear in the Guild’s 2019 Yearbook. The photos will also appear on the Guild display at the BRDC Clubhouse at Silverstone. The runners up will receive Highly Commended certificates.

Material for entry should have been published or broadcast in the 12 months up to 30 September 2018. PDFs, JPEGs or web URLs can be entered online, and in some categories physical copies of publications can be posted to the Honorary Secretary. All material entered must be readily accessible from the date of entry until 31 December 2018. WeTransfer, Dropbox and similar services are not acceptable.

The closing date for entries is Sunday 30 September 2018.

For full details on all the award categories, prize money and an entry form go to the awards pages. If you have any questions about the entry procedure contact honorary secretary, Chris Adamson at honsec@gomw.co.uk

Dramatic photos from Guild member Maurice Selden’s 45-year career as a rally photographer will be on show in a free exhibition at the Theatr Brycheiniog arts centre in Brecon this summer.

The exhibition will be launched with a Q&A on 28 June featuring not only Maurice, but also Phil Mills of Llandrindod Wells-based Viking Motorsport, and Welsh rally driver Sara Williams.

Maurice started his career in 1972 as staff photographer for Motor Sport and Motoring News covering everything from Formula 1 to sports cars and rallying, before deciding to concentrate on the World Rally Championship. He eventually covered a record-breaking 449 WRC events worldwide.

Maurice’s images have been featured in books and publications all over the world, and he has also supplied rally images to many car manufacturers.

A new permanent display of Guild memorabilia has opened at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu.

The display tells the story of the Guild from its inception in 1944 as the Motoring Correspondents’ Circle. A series of story boards detail the Guild’s annual awards, its training for journalists and its links with Beaulieu.

At the heart of the exhibition is a new display unit showcasing some of the Guild’s trophies and memorabilia including racing helmets worn by Sir Jackie Stewart and Graham Hill, a bronze prancing horse presented to the first British F1 champion Mike Hawthorn by Enzo Ferrari, a piston from John Cobb’s record breaking Napier Railton and the original 1,000 Mile Trial cup.

The best motoring journalism and photography of 2017 was honoured at The Guild of Motoring Writers’ annual dinner and awards at the Royal Automobile Club, Pall Mall, London, on Thursday 30 November.

Breakthrough Award sponsored by Motoring Research

The Motoring Research Breakthrough Award aims to help give the most promising enthusiast motoring journalists their first professional editorial gig.

Formerly the Breakthrough Blogger Award, it’s been refocused for 2017 to look at new talent across all platforms – including social media, YouTube, podcasts and other emerging outlets.

Judges are looking for clear demonstrations of talent, creative uses of platforms and channels, strong editorial potential and a good helping of enthusiasm. All the necessary ingredients to give Breakthrough winners the best possible chance of turning their hobby into a paid professional career.

The prize is, thus, professionally focused: the winner will get their first paid work experience job, providing content for the Motoring Research publishing network.

Former winners of the Motoring Research Breakthrough Award include Keith Jones (now continuity editor at Parkers), Chris Auty, John Redfern (now newsletter editor at Motoring Research) and Ben Gribbin.

Candidates are asked to tell us why they deserve the opportunity to make a breakthrough into the professional world of motoring journalism.

Up to three examples of work can be highlighted, along with a link to the title, channel or other platform they would like to be considered for the Breakthrough Award.

The award is only open to rookie journalists who would not be eligible for either Full or Associate membership of the Guild of Motoring Writers.

The prize includes:

  • Paid work experience package with Motoring Research
  • Two years’ provisional membership of the Guild
  • Invitation to the Guild Annual Dinner at the Royal Automobile Club in Pall Mall, London, on 30 November

Motorsport is under threat, and your action now can help save it writes Guild committee member Lara Platman.

In 2014 the European Court ruled that any use of a vehicle required compulsory insurance cover, so long as that use was consistent with the normal function of the vehicle. This would require all EU Member States to enact laws requiring compulsory and unlimited third-party liability insurance to cover personal injury between motorsport competitors and car-to-car damage during any competition, at any level, whether regulated by the FIA or FIM or not. Insurance of this kind is not currently available and looks unlikely to be available in future – which would mean motorsport would not be able to continue in the EU.

The Guild is supporting the efforts made by the Motor Sports Association (MSA) and the Motorsport Industry Association (MIA) in responding to this issue.

This is a serious threat not just to competitors and the motorsport industry but also to journalists and media organisations producing coverage of the sport. We can work together to make the European Commission fully aware of the economic importance of motorsport and the employment which our sport and industry provides across the European Union by responding to an EU consultation which closes on 20 October.

For more information see the the MIA’s call to action and the MSA’s response to a Department for Transport consultation.

How to respond

  • Go to the EU consultation page  and click the link ‘Respond to the consultation’ in the blue box
  • In Section 1 enter information about yourself as appropriate
  • In Section 2 ‘Your opinon’ scroll down to section ‘B2.7 Scope’ and answer at least questions 27, 28, 29, 30, 31 and 32 – our suggested answers follow
  • Q27: Answer ‘No. It should only apply to public roads, not private property’
  • Q28: Answer ‘No. If motorsport vehicles were exempted, the cost of claims would have to be met by organisations such as the MIB in the UK. This would transfer to cost to normal motorists, which is unfair.’
  • Q29: Answer ‘All vehicles used for motorsport activities’
  • Q30: Answer ‘No. Motorsport activities should not be covered by compulsory Motor Third Party Liability (MTPL) insurance’
  • Q31: Answer ‘No. Compulsory Motor Third Party Liability (MTPL) insurance should not cover accidents that occur in areas which the public are not allowed to access’
  • Q32: If you represent an organization which would be adversely affected by this policy, describe that effect here. Read the MIA’s guidance for advice on how you might respond.
  • Click ‘Next’ and then ‘Submit’ to submit your response.

Remember the consultation closes on 20 October so act now!

Stunning collections of aircraft and vehicles were on show for Guild members taking part in the 2017 Bring Your Own Vehicle Day.

Members met at Roger Dudding’s Studio 434 collection in Potters Bar, which has cars of all ages – including no less than 22 1970s/80s Aston Martin Lagondas – and all sorts of motoring memorabilia. Members also viewed the company’s impressive new classic car storage facility which is now nearing completion nearby.

Cars taking part in the event ranged from vintage MGs and classic Jaguars to modern sports and saloon cars, all of them given a short blast up the A1M to Old Warden aerodrome, where members gathered for guided tours of the Shuttleworth Collection of aircraft and vehicles. The visit coincided with the second day of the de Havilland Moth Club charity weekend, so there were plenty of vintage aircraft in the sky as well as on the ground.

Guild member Richard Dredge, who took part in his rare Alpine A610, was awarded a ‘spirit of the event’ prize by chairman Andrew Noakes consisting of a trophy and a range of car care products kindly donated by Autoglym.

Guild Driver of the Year 2016 Lando Norris put his Carlin Motorsport Dallara F317-Volkswagen on pole position for the first race of the FIA European Formula 3 season at Silverstone – and followed it up with an impressive win.

Norris put in a mature drive in slippery conditions at a chilly Silverstone to win by 1.7sec, breaking the lap record in the process. The field included six-time F3 race winner Jake Dennis, five-time winner Max Günther and two sons of former world champions, Mick Schumacher and Pedro Piquet.

Earlier in the day Norris received his Driver of the Year 2016 trophy from chairman Andrew Noakes. “Lando’s great performance in Formula Renault in 2016 caught the eye of our Driver of the Year judges,” said Noakes. “His race win in tricky conditions at Silverstone today just underlines that he’s one to watch.”

A bad start compromised Norris’s race the following day, but in the third Silverstone race he put in another fine performance, including a spectacular overtake, to finish on the podium. He leaves Silverstone third overall in the European F3 championship and leading rookie.
