Employer Honest John
Location Peterborough
Job type Full time

Honest John is seeking a bright, enthusiastic and driven journalist to take responsibility for large sections of content, be bristling with new ideas - and have the confidence to make them a reality. This is a role for an ambitious, creative and determined journalist who takes the initiative. You’re a self-starter who’s comfortable working on your own as you are in a small, dynamic team. You make things happen and inspire others to do the same.

Reporting to the Editor, you’re responsible for all new car content, from reviews and road tests, to new car news and long term tests, and will be on top of what is likely to be launched in the next 12 months.

You will be on first name terms with the press offices of every major manufacturer and will have developed long-term working relationships with individual PRs to ensure that every major car launch is covered and a constant stream of cars is organised for review. You will also be expected to be capable of organising a long term test rota, too.

You will also work closely with others in the editorial team, mentoring less experienced members of the team, as well as liaising with our marketing and commercial teams where necessary.

This is not a role for someone who considers themselves a wannabe racing driver or is interested in driving the next supercar. You will have a thorough understanding of the brand, its readership and the type of cars and content that are likely to interest them.

As well as being a force behind making our website and mobile sites a continued success, you will be expected to produce video content, contribute to offline projects, organise photo shoots and play a key part in our annual awards.

You will also be as comfortable picking up on trends, analysing site traffic and taking SEO into consideration as you will be writing pithy, informed and engaging stories.

Skills and personal qualities

  • Develop strong and long term relationships with manufacturer PRs, so that is at the top of launch lists. Where necessary attend meetings with manufacturers to communicate website developments.
  • Propose new ideas and developments for reviews to help maximise the potential of existing content and help to develop new editorial.
  • Be able to work well with a wide range of people from different parts of the business
  • Be a team leader, able to inspire others
  • Be able to manage different projects at the same time
  • Be energetic about and an advocate for and its projects
  • Be organised and methodical
  • Be able to work well under pressure
  • Have good presentation skills.

Qualifications and Skills

You will preferably have a degree and five years experience in motoring journalism.

Naturally, you will need to hold a current, full driving licence.
