Haymarket Automotive comprises What Car?, PistonHeads and Autocar. Used car content on these brands is booming, and Haymarket Automotive is looking for a deputy editor to support our used car editor in keeping their reader’s appetite satiated with engaging, informative, knowledgeable and entertaining news, reviews and videos.

The thrust of this role will be focused on What Car?, Britain's biggest car buying guide. Used cars already play a pivotal part in its dominance in the market and you will be helping us build on that success.

PistonHeads' extraordinary growth in recent years has been driven by its used car content, and a successful candidate would be expected to have the knowledge, expertise and social know-how to wade into a forum debate with diplomacy at a moment’s notice.

Autocar is famous for its weekly used car content in print and online and its used car print specials, which are regularly among the best-selling issues and most popular online content.

Job Requirements

Your primary job will be writing used car features and reviews that make full use of the industry-leading experience and facilities at Haymarket's disposal. However, you will also be expected to assist with management of the used car review database and, in time, present videos.

You will need to integrate with other departments to ensure you hit immediate targets and contribute new ideas across both titles. Furthermore, you must have the knowledge and confidence to act as an ambassador for the What Car?, PistonHeads and Autocar brands at all times, both inside Haymarket and to the wider industry.

You will be an established motoring journalist with the following skills and experience:

  • An ability to write clean, engaging copy to a variety of styles and to tight deadlines
  • Experience of uploading content to the web using a content management system
  • An enthusiasm for used and classic cars, and an understanding of the way both markets work
  • An understanding of the principles of SEO

In addition, the following skills would be advantageous, but are not necessary:

  • Experience of proof-reading copy
  • Experience of road testing and reviewing cars in print and for the web A working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop
