Employer Haymarket Automotive

Location Twickenham
Job type Full Time

Haymarket Automotive comprises What Car?, PistonHeads and Autocar. Used car content across these brands is booming, and Haymarket is looking for a deputy editor to support the used car editor in keeping their reader’s appetite satiated with engaging, informative, knowledgeable and entertaining news, reviews and videos.

The thrust of this role will be focused on What Car?, Britain's biggest car buying guide. Used cars already play a pivotal part in its dominance in the market and you will be helping to build on that success.

PistonHeads' extraordinary growth in recent years has been driven by its used car content, and a successful candidate would be expected to have the knowledge, expertise and social know-how to wade into a forum debate with diplomacy at a moment’s notice.

Autocar is famous for its weekly used car content in print and online and its used car print specials, which are regularly among the best-selling issues and most popular online content.

Your primary job will be writing used car reviews and features that make full use of the industry-leading experience and facilities at Haymarket Automotive's disposal. You will also be expected to assist with management of the used car review database, help out with the day-to-day running of the department when the editor is not available, come up with new ideas for content that will maximise our online audience, and in time, present videos on used and classic cars.

You will also need to integrate with other departments to ensure you hit immediate targets and contribute new ideas across all three titles. Furthermore, you must have the knowledge and confidence to act as an ambassador for the What Car?, PistonHeads and Autocar brands at all times, both inside Haymarket and to the wider industry.

You will be an established motoring journalist with the following skills and experience:

  • An ability to write clean, engaging copy for both in-market consumer and enthusiast titles, to a variety of different styles and to tight deadlines
  • Experience of uploading content to the web using a content management system
  • Experience of proof-reading copy
  • Experience of managing and commissioning other journalists
  • An enthusiasm for used and classic cars
  • Experience of buying and selling used cars, or some understanding of the usual process of doing so
  • Experience of road testing and reviewing cars in print and for the web
  • An understanding of the used and classic car markets
  • An understanding of the principles of SEO

In addition, a working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop would be advantageous, but is not essential.
