The Guild of Motoring Writers was delighted to host its annual Dinner and Awards at the RAC, Pall Mall, on 3 December.
During the course of the lively and thoroughly entertaining evening, the Guild and its award sponsors presented cash prizes, citations and trophies to the winners in front of other members and guests. Due to the consistently high calibre of entries, some sponsors opted to include a Highly Commended citation in addition to the main prizes worth a total of more than £20,000.
For 2009, a new award for business, industry and trade journalists, sponsored by Prova PR, was introduced. Bentley Motors stepped in to sponsor the International Trophy, the Young Journalist of the Year was sponsored by headlineauto, and Audi took over sponsorship of the photography awards, which reverted to two categories.
In a change to previous formats, the Driver and Rider of the Year awards were presented to young, up-and-coming British competitors who, in the eyes of the Guild’s own sporting experts, show particular promise. The 2009 World Supersport champion Cal Crutchlow and 2009 World Series by Renault race winner Oliver Turvey of Carlin Motorsport won, and their trophies were handed over by BRDC president Damon Hill, OBE. As Oliver was offered a test with McLaren this week, his father Andrew collected the trophy on his son’s behalf.
The Pierre Dreyfus trophy for the UK Journalist of the Year has been sponsored since its inception by Renault UK. The addition to the prize fund of £500 by the Guild brings this award to £3,000 and it is now known as the Renault UK/Guild of Motoring Writers UK Journalist of the Year Award. This, arguably the evening’s most coveted prize, went to Ray Massey of the Daily Mail.
