Joining The Guild
How to join The Guild
As with any leading representative association, membership of the Guild is not open to anyone, and prospective members must fulfil certain criteria.
A Guild member can be a journalist, photographer, author, broadcaster or web editor of any nationality. Their role must have been for at least one year either solely concerned with motoring, or to a sufficient extent that in the committee's opinion is worthy of membership.
Guild membership costs £97 per year, £82 if paid by 10 January in any subscription year (£50 for those under 30); plus a one-off joining fee of £25 for all applicants over 30. Anyone wishing to join the Guild must fill in an application form available from the General Secretary, supply samples of their work, and also obtain two referees. These can either be existing Guild members who know the applicant, or active members of the motoring press or industry, for example the prospective member's Editor.
Membership applications are considered by the committee at its monthly meetings. If an application is provisionally approved by the committee then their details are published in Update and membership comments invited. Assuming there are no objections, the member is duly elected to the Guild at the next committee meeting.
Note: Referees need not be Guild members but should not work in PR. Applicants seeking referees from the Guild may not realise that people working with them might already be members, but General Secretary Patricia Lodge can assist in identifying such members.
